STUART FOX plays nylon string, electric, and MIDI guitars as well as Renaissance and Baroque lutes and theorbo. He has been Director of the CalArts Guitar Program since 1973. He has worked professionally in every area of musical performance. He performs as a soloist and has performed and recorded with ensembles such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and Southwest Chamber Music. He does phonograph, motion picture and television recording and performs chamber music in the Los Angeles area. A student of Pepe and Angel Romero and José Tomás, he was the first classical guitarist to receive a Fulbright Scholarship to study in Europe. He is a leading specialist in the performance of contemporary music and received a two year fellowship in 1970 to work in experimental music with Lukas Foss at the Center of the Creative and Performing Arts in Buffalo. He has performed extensively on the Monday Evening Concerts, the Ojai Festival, the Green Umbrella Concerts, and as a guest with many of the nation’s leading contemporary music ensembles A recipient of Bachelors and Masters degrees in Musicology from the University of Southern California, he is a specialist in the interpretation of early music on original instruments has performed on lute and theorbo with the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, the Long Beach Opera, the New York City Opera, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the L.A. Chamber Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Master Chorale, Musica Pacifica, the New Albion Ensemble, and the Early Music Ensemble of Los Angeles. He received grants from the California Arts Council to do concert tours in California from 1985–l995. He appears on recordings with the ABC, Angel, Ars Nova, CRI, Deutsche Grammophon, Orion, Protone, Cambria and Navona labels.
